Internship Opportunities

HIV/AIDS Education and Outreach

The Douglas County AIDS Project (DCAP) is a nonprofit, community-based organization serving Franklin, Jefferson and Douglas counties in Kansas.  DCAP’s services cover three essential areas of HIV-related concerns.  Case Management provides supportive services for people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.  These services include supportive counseling, emotional support, helping clients apply for public assistance programs, referrals to other providers and emergency financial assistance.  Educational services include prevention activities such as public presentations, information displays, community awareness activities, and outreach to targeted at-risk populations. Free, confidential HIV testing is provided to the public both onsite and at specified off-site events.

Due to the small nature of the agency, you would be asked to fulfill a wide variety of responsibilities and develop a range of skills.  As an intern, you are typically involved extensively in education and outreach programming.  You may also be involved in fundraising, event planning, networking with other service providers, program development, volunteer coordination, or other special projects.

One of the greatest benefits of interning with DCAP is the opportunity to customize your experience to your specific interests.  Each internship experience is individual and is structured to meet both the needs of DCAP and the interests and aspirations of the intern.  It is designed to capitalize on your creative talents and abilities while helping you develop new skills that can be successfully applied to careers in the public, private or nonprofit sector.

Typical education and outreach activities include providing current and relevant information on HIV/AIDS and STD’s.  Presentations may include hands-on demonstrations with barriers such as male and female condoms, and are often customized to meet the specific needs of the audience.  As an intern, you are encouraged to assist in presentations and, towards the end of your internship, lead a presentation yourself.  Presentations and programming are facilitated for a diverse range of audiences, including those in treatment for substance abuse, college and high school students, women in transition, and a variety of other social groups and faith communities.
