DCAP Commemorates 20 Years of Service

DCAP is reaching out to past and present supporters, board members, directors, and volunteers to help us commemorate 20 years of service at this year’s Red Ribbon Art Auction.

We hope to see many old friends and familiar faces!
Stacey Reflects after Summer Abroad

Stacey Burton, DCAP’s Education Outreach Coordinator, checks in after her time in Central America:

Hola! While it is good to be back in Kansas, I am not sure how I feel about giving up the tropical weather for scarves and mittens! As I reflect on my trip and continue my education and prevention work back in the United States, I realize we are all struggling through the same battle. In Latin America, I was very impressed by large billboards that provide prevention messages in various languages, which allow equal access to prevention messages. Similar to DCAP, The HIV/AIDS projects in Latin America run on limited staff and have large areas to access. Certain areas are only accessible via canoe. I was inspired by the programs in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and their ability to access communities, despite limited resources. Programs provide adequate and understandable information to those who need it most. It has renewed my vision and strength in the ability of the international community to come together and fight this disease.

Global DCAP Volunteer

One of DCAP’s volunteers, Alex Lesnikowski, recently returned from Nepal where she volunteered with the Blue Diamond Society. The organization is the first of its kind in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world. Its founder, Sunil Pant, started the organization nine years ago to represent gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered members of society and bring awareness to rising incidences of sexually transmitted diseases in the region, including HIV.

During her time with the Blue Diamond Society, Alex worked as a health ambassador and raised HIV/AIDS awareness. Congratulations on the job well done, Alex!

Success Story in Client Care

In September, I took over a few of our existing clients, most of whom I knew little about. While getting to know my new clients, I learned one man had been homeless for over six months. By the grace of a friend, he had been staying in a basement, but was without facilities. He was also not eligible for housing assistance at that time.

Through our efforts in collaboration with individuals from Bert Nash and SRS, our client was able to access some General Assistance funding and become eligible for housing through DCAP from KCTH (Kansas Care Through Housing). Our client was swiftly housed in a lovely appartment thanks to the savvy diplomacy and advocating of Case Manager Colleen O’Hare-Newman. She was able to negotiate with the landlord, allowing our client to move in to a two-bedroom apartment for the price of a one-bedroom. Unfortunately, the client had virtually no furniture or appliances.

Amazingly enough, I received a call from a couple who were moving and wanted to donate a bedroom set, along with other domestic appliances. The catch was everything needed to be out of the house immediately. I ran next door to Colleen (who incidentally drives a large pick up truck) and explained the situation at hand. It was a go! Colleen and I (and our spouses) spent the following weekend moving and transporting everything. Miraculous timing and hard work paid off in the end. Our client is now housed, with a bed, dresser, kitchen utensils, and a host of other household items.

DCAP Receives Funding from MAC Cosmetics

We are excited to announce that DCAP was awarded the MAC AIDS Fund grant. The funds provided will expand the existing Emergency Fund Assistance program that is currently assuring stable, affordable, and suitable housing for persons living with HIV in our community and includes nutritional food provided to families affected by HIV/AIDS. DCAP hopes to partner with the MAC AIDS Fund to provide supportive services for our clients as they work to gain/maintain stable nutrition intake as an integral part of achieving the best possible quality of life.

We are aspiring to put together an all-inclusive package for each person with the assistance of a nutritionist from Kansas State Research and Extension. Each client would be provided nutritional supplements, educational material and motivators to assist in helping them maintain a stable, nutritional diet. Nutrition can help the boost immune system, maximize the effectiveness of antiretroviral medicines, reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, and contribute to a better overall quality of life. We are thrilled that we can offer this opportunity to our clients and hope to have the packages to each client before the start of the New Year.
